Gloucester Mural Artists Transform Charity Walls
Gloucester mural artists, Mint and Mabel, have been working with James Hopkins Trust to transform the walls at Kites Corner in Barnwood with bespoke, hand painted artwork.
James Hopkins Trust is a registered charity providing free nurse-led respite care, play and recreation, and family support for children in Gloucestershire who are severely disabled and have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. They support over 100 families both in their homes and at the purpose-built respite facility, Kites Corner, in Gloucester. Although they are a clinical setting, they strive to ensure that Kites Corner is as welcoming and comfortable as possible, with a real ‘home from home’ feel.
“The children are at the heart of everything we do” - James Hopkins Trust
Local muralists Mint + Mabel, the creative partnership of artists Hattie and Erin, specialise in murals, graphic design and illustration. With over 20 years of combined design and illustration experience, the duo create bespoke murals that transform charities, community spaces, schools, and workplaces. Their goal is to bring colour, creativity, and personality to every project across Gloucestershire and the UK.
James Hopkins Trust tasked Mint + Mabel to design and paint murals in the change room and the corridor leading to the bedrooms at Kites Corner, with the vision to turn the blank walls into vibrant works of art for the children and staff to enjoy.
“It is a real privilege to work on projects that not only spark our creativity but also have a genuine impact on the experience of the children and families supported by James Hopkins Trust.” - Erin, Mint + Mabel
“Following a redesign of our children’s changing room we were keen to bring this to life with a new mural to help create a more inviting, less clinical space for them. We had been following Mint and Mabel for some time on social media and had always loved the work that they do, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Erin and Hattie visited us a Kites Corner to see the space and we talked about a pond theme, where there would be points of interest below and above the waterline so that team would be able to use the mural to distract and engage the children whilst in the room.
Using the colours and items already in the room they came up with a wonderful pond design, with a few tweaks here and there we settled on our final design and Erin and Hattie spent a fun packed weekend with us. It was amazing to see how they brought the design to life and the final mural surpassed all of our expectations.” - Sarah Nash, Charity Manager at James Hopkins Trust
“The mural has done exactly what we wanted it to; the room looks just wonderful and not at all what you would expect from a clinical changing room. The team are able to use the animals and other images to engage the children and our new toy rubber ducks tie in perfectly.” - Sarah, Charity Manager
“We were so thrilled with the final design that we were keen to work with Erin and Hattie again. This time to create a magical fairy woodland in our bedroom corridor. Using their calming colour palette and again working with the features already in the space they took our vision and turned it into really beautiful space, perfect for helping to calm the children as they go down for their naps or for bedtime during our overnight respite.”
“It has been an absolute pleasure to with Erin and Hattie from Mint and Mabel on these two projects. We are delighted with the work that they have done, and they made the whole process so easy. We have already received so many wonderful comments from families and visitors on the two new spaces, we love them. If you have the opportunity to work with them, we would highly recommend.
We would also like to give a shout out to Highnam Community Café who over 12 months held various fundraising events, raising the funds to pay for this work to be done – thank you.” - Sarah, Charity Manager
